📖 The Story of Punch

Punch is a real baby Japanese macaque whose journey from rejection to acceptance touched millions of hearts around the world. This is his true story.

July 3, 2025 — Birth
Punch was born at a wildlife park in Japan into a troop of Japanese macaques. Within hours, his mother rejected him — refusing to nurse or hold him. Park staff found the tiny newborn alone, shivering, and barely clinging to life. He weighed just 350 grams.
July 5, 2025 — Meeting Oran-Mama
Caretakers placed an IKEA Djungelskog orangutan plush in Punch's incubator. The moment his tiny hands touched the soft orange fur, he grabbed on and never let go. Staff named the plush "Oran-Mama." From that day forward, Punch treated her as his real mother — sleeping on her, clinging to her, and crying whenever she was taken for washing.
July – August 2025 — First Steps
Hand-raised on formula by dedicated caretakers, Punch slowly gained strength. He opened his eyes fully at two weeks, began gripping with his feet at three weeks, and took his first wobbly steps at one month — always returning to Oran-Mama's embrace. His big, expressive eyes and tiny pink face made him an instant favorite among staff.
September 2025 — Going Viral
Photos of Punch clutching his orange plush mother went viral on social media. Millions fell in love with the tiny macaque who refused to give up. "Punch and Oran-Mama" became a symbol of resilience and the power of comfort objects. Fan art, memes, and tribute videos flooded the internet.
Oct 2025 – Jan 2026 — Growing Up
Punch grew from a fragile infant into a curious, energetic juvenile. He learned to climb branches, crack nuts, and forage for food — but always kept Oran-Mama within arm's reach. Caretakers noted his remarkable intelligence and stubborn determination. He was small for his age but fierce in spirit.
Early February 2026 — Facing the Troop
The time came to introduce Punch to his troop. It did not go well. Older macaques pushed him, bit him, and chased him away. In macaque society, a motherless juvenile is an outsider. Punch was bullied relentlessly. But every morning, he returned to the troop enclosure — bruised but unbroken, with Oran-Mama tucked under his arm.
Mid February 2026 — A Turning Point
After two weeks of daily rejection, something changed. An older female macaque approached Punch and began grooming him — picking through his fur gently. In macaque culture, grooming is the highest sign of acceptance and social bonding. Other troop members watched. Then, one by one, they stopped chasing him away.
Late February 2026 — Accepted
Punch was officially part of the troop. He played with other juveniles, shared food, and even groomed others back. But every evening, when the troop settled down to sleep, Punch would quietly retrieve Oran-Mama from his corner and curl up with her. The caretakers say he still does this every single night. 🧡

🥚 The History of Tamagotchi

Raise Punch is inspired by one of the most beloved toys ever created. Here's the story behind the virtual pet revolution.

1996 — The Idea
Aki Maita, a Bandai employee, came up with the concept after seeing a TV commercial about a boy who wanted to bring his pet turtle to school. She imagined a portable digital pet that could live in your pocket — something you'd care for, feed, and love, anywhere you went.
November 23, 1996 — Launch Day
The first Tamagotchi launched in Japan. The egg-shaped keychain device with its tiny LCD screen sold out instantly. Within months, over 40 million units were sold worldwide. Children — and adults — became obsessed with keeping their digital pets alive.
1997 — Global Phenomenon
Tamagotchi mania swept the world. Schools banned them because students couldn't stop checking on their pets during class. The devices were so popular that Bandai couldn't manufacture them fast enough. A black market emerged, with rare colors selling for hundreds of dollars.
1997 — Cultural Impact
Tamagotchi wasn't just a toy — it was a cultural moment. It taught an entire generation about responsibility, empathy, and the emotional bonds we form with digital creatures. When a Tamagotchi "died," children genuinely grieved. Psychologists studied the phenomenon, calling it one of the first examples of human-digital emotional attachment.
2004 – 2023 — Evolution
Bandai released dozens of Tamagotchi versions over the years: Tamagotchi Connection (with infrared linking), Tamagotchi Friends, Tamagotchi ON (with Bluetooth), and the Tamagotchi Smart (a wristwatch). Each generation added new features, but the core remained the same: care for a creature that depends on you.
2025 — Raise Punch
Raise Punch brings the Tamagotchi spirit into the modern web — combining the emotional caregiving loop with a real story. Instead of a generic digital pet, you're raising Punch: a real baby macaque who was rejected, found comfort in a plush toy, and fought his way to acceptance. Every banana you feed, every cuddle you give, echoes the real care that saved his life.

🐒 About Japanese Macaques

Punch is a Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) — one of the most fascinating primates on Earth.

❄️ Snow Monkeys

The northernmost-living non-human primates. They survive -20°C winters in the mountains of Honshu and are famous for bathing in natural hot springs to stay warm.

🧠 Highly Intelligent

They wash sweet potatoes in the ocean before eating — a cultural behavior first observed in 1953 that spread through the entire troop via social learning across generations.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Complex Society

Troops have strict hierarchies led by an alpha female. Grooming maintains social bonds — the same behavior that signaled Punch's acceptance. Up to 4 hours a day!

🎾 Playful Nature

Young macaques love wrestling, chasing, and making snowballs for fun — one of the few animals that play with objects recreationally with no practical purpose.

😢 Maternal Bonds

Mother-infant bonds are incredibly strong. When a baby is rejected — as Punch was — it's extremely rare for the infant to survive without human intervention.

🌍 Conservation

Listed as "Least Concern" by the IUCN but face habitat loss threats. Wildlife parks like Punch's play a crucial role in education and conservation.

🧸 Oran-Mama — The IKEA Bear That Saved a Life

Punch's surrogate mother isn't a real orangutan — she's a stuffed toy. But to Punch, she's everything. Meet the unlikely hero of this story.

🏷️ The Product

Oran-Mama is an IKEA DJUNGELSKOG soft toy — a 66cm (26") orangutan plush from IKEA's beloved jungle animal collection. Launched in 2018, the Djungelskog line features bears, tigers, pandas, and orangutans, all designed with a friendly, huggable aesthetic. The orangutan retails for around $12.99 — making it one of the most affordable heroes in animal rescue history.

🌍 The Name

"Djungelskog" means "jungle forest" in Swedish — fitting for IKEA's Scandinavian roots. The park caretakers named the plush "Oran-Mama" — a combination of "orangutan" and "mama" — because Punch immediately treated her as his real mother from the moment they met.

🧡 Why It Works

Primatologists have long known that orphaned primates need a "contact comfort" object — something soft and warm to cling to. This echoes Harry Harlow's famous 1958 experiments, which proved that baby monkeys preferred a soft cloth "mother" over a wire one that provided food. Punch's attachment to Oran-Mama is the same instinct: warmth and softness mean safety.

📱 Internet Fame

After Punch went viral, IKEA Djungelskog orangutan plushes sold out worldwide. Fans bought them in solidarity, posting photos with the hashtag #OranMama. Some IKEA stores reported 10x normal sales. The plush became a symbol of comfort, resilience, and the idea that love can come from the most unexpected places.

🛁 Wash Day Drama

Caretakers need to wash Oran-Mama regularly for hygiene. Every wash day is a mini crisis — Punch screams, searches frantically, and refuses to eat until she's returned. Staff now keep a second Djungelskog as a backup, but Punch can tell the difference and clearly prefers the original. He knows his mama by scent.

💤 Bedtime Ritual

Even now that Punch is accepted by his troop and plays with other macaques all day, he still sleeps with Oran-Mama every single night. He retrieves her from his corner, wraps both arms around her orange fur, buries his face in her chest, and falls asleep. The caretakers say they've never seen anything like it.

🧸 Fun fact: In the game, when you press "Cuddle," Punch hugs Oran-Mama — just like the real Punch does dozens of times every day. The orange blob next to him on the LCD screen? That's her.
